Backstage at recital – ready to dance!
With Dress Rehearsal less than a week away and our 2013 Recitals just a week later, we start to hear a common question this time of year – “Why do we have a recital?”
Dance recitals are the standard year-end activity at most dance schools (including Addicted 2 Dance in Ambler). After more than eight months of weekly dance classes, choreography, costume fittings, Picture Day, Dress Rehearsal, and months of planning, the special day arrives.
Some attendees look forward to seeing their loved one under stage lights for a few shining minutes and struggle to sit through the remainder of the program.
Our staff, however, sees much more in these wonderful students while they are preparing for and participating in their special moment.
Dancing on stage in front of an audience builds confidence in these young performers. They know that all eyes are on them while they whirl, twirl, and jump. The joy and pride the students are filled with when they stride off the stage makes the backstage area feel electric!
Performing a two to three minute routine will not allow a choreographer to demonstrate all they’ve taught over the course of the year, but it does allow students to showcase many of the dance skills learned and practiced in class. The sense of accomplishment seen on the faces of these terrific kids says it all.
Dance can often be seen as an individual art form. While students progress and develop at their own rate, dance is a wonderful team sport full of cooperation and teamwork. Classmates must all attend classes in order to learn and effectively practice the choreography. Each student is an equally important piece in the stage blocking (arrangement) puzzle. Classes at Addicted 2 Dance are full of supportive kids who clap for each other, lift each other up, and make friends with each other.
During recital, we hope all parents are as proud of our dancers as we are when they take the stage. During the show, we encourage everyone take a moment to realize that that beyond the sequins, lights, and music is a young performer being lifted “2 the next level”!
Please see our Recital Page for additional information and to purchase tickets for this year’s recitals on June 7 & 8.

Congrats to all of our winners. Check out some of the performances below!
Addicted 2 Dance (A2D) Company Dancers and parents recently ended a three week marathon of weekend dance conventions with Artists Simply Human (ASH), held at the Hyatt Regency in Philadelphia on January 26 and 27.
This was A2D’s first time at ASH and dancers were really impressed with the AH-Mazing teachers! They inspired, gave feedback, and walked around adjusting students. The level of training was top notch and all attending dancers left the convention excited to get back to A2D to show their teachers and fellow dancers what they learned!
Attendees loved the great choreographers on hand including Toyko (Improv/Contemporary), Desiree Robins (Jazz, Leaps & Turns), Jason Samuels-Smith (Tap), Tovaris Wilson (Hip Hop), and many more! There was a LIVE DJ who played music while classes were in session, too! Dancers thought Toyko was hysterical and had such a great attitude and demeanor with all of the kids – he interacted with A2D Company Dancer Michael a few times – making one of the only two boys in the junior room feel liberated.
Scholarship auditions were held by ASH Director, Braham Crane, who studied at Crane Performing Arts in nearby West Chester. A2D Company Dancers Maddie Nowak, Gabrielle Katz, and Olivia Mailey made it through auditions and got to perform in ASH’s closing show on Sunday afternoon. All three girls were awarded scholarships to attend the ASH Summer Intensive and have an opportunity to apprentice at future ASH Conventions! They also won a partial scholarship to next year’s winter convention.
Addicted 2 Dance Company Dancers enjoyed all three conventions attended, learned a lot from all the fantastic staff, bonded so much as teammates and friends, and now turn their sights on their competition season beginning in late February. Best of luck to these amazing dancers!
