A2D Class Descriptions

PRE COMBO: An introductory to ballet, tap, and jazz designed especially for your little one! Classes utilize all three dance styles (ballet/tap/jazz) along with creative movement, body awareness & social skills. This class is for ages 2 ½ -4. Pre Combo classes are 45 minutes in length.

BALLET/TAP/JAZZ: Designed for children who have been introduced to these dance styles. This class will begin to teach the basics of ballet, tap and jazz.  This class is designed for ages 4-7, and a perfect “next step” to PreCombo.  Ballet/Tap/Jazz Classes are 45 minutes in length.

BALLET: Ballet is the background of ALL styles of dance! Classical ballet with the emphasis on barre, center, adagio and variations. Learn proper terminology, strength, positioning and flexibility.  Ballet classes are 1 hour to 1 ½ hours in length.

PREP POINTE/POINTE: Prep pointe prepares the body, especially the ankles and feet, for pointe.  Students will be allowed to go on pointe ONLY with the okay of instructor and Miss Aubrey.

TECHNIQUE: Foundational principles and steps include “pulling up” (a popular term used to describe proper posture and lifting the muscles so as to increase turnout, quantity and quality of turns, and proper alignment), posture, pointing the toe, and flexibility. A dancer with good technique requires good placement (or alignment), and turnout. Where alignment refers to the dancer’s ability to keep the head, shoulders, and hips aligned vertically, turnout refers to the dancer’s ability to complete movements with the legs rotated outward. This can be in areas such as clean footwork, graceful port de bras (carriage of the arms), and overall correct positions and lines/angles.  Technique classes at A2D are set on a rotating schedule including yoga, pilates, strength and stretch, and musicality.

YOGA: Yoga includes physical exercise, it is also a lifestyle practice for which exercise is just one component. Training your mind, body, and breath, as well as connecting with your spirituality, are the main goals of the yoga lifestyle. Yoga has tons of benefits. It can improve flexibility, strength, balance, and stamina. In addition, many people who practice yoga say that it reduces anxiety and stress, improves mental clarity, and even helps them sleep better.

JAZZ: A high-energy form of dance. Typically styles you would see on Broadway. Combining kicks, leaps, jumps, turns and everything in between! Learn body placement, movement, expression and proper technique.

CONTEMPORARY: A blend of ballet and jazz techniques that create a perfect avenue of self-expression performed to contemporary music. Dancers will gain fluidity of movement, grace, control, individual expression and self-confidence.

MODERN: Based on ballet technique, modern dance allows students a mode for self-expression. It expresses complex emotions and abstract ideas.

HIP HOP: Inspired by urban culture today. This class is very popular! Class is designed to allow the students to let go and dance without being limited by rules of technique! A very athletic class for boys, girls, men and women of all ages and levels. Learn the latest street dancing moves from NY, Philly & LA.  You will learn to how to control movements as well as get a work out!

MUSICAL THEATRE: A class designed for a star! Teaches the basics of dancing, singing & acting and learn how to blend them all together.

MUNCHKIN MANIA: This program was developed to stimulate a child’s mind through growth and interaction. Your class will begin sitting in a circle, singing songs such as “Twinkle, Twinkle”, “Head Shoulders Knees and Toes”, we play with noisemakers, the parachute, dancing & musical instruments. Your child will experience interaction with other children, their parents and the instructor. As the child grows to the next level, the class becomes more interactive and challenging. Munchkin Mania is a great way to socialize your child by getting them used to being around new people. It also helps with stranger anxiety in preparation for nursery school and kindergarten. Each class runs 45 minutes in length.

BROADWAY BABIES: This class teaches Broadway style singing and dancing. Your child will be a Broadway star! The class also helps children with self-expression and self-confidence. Broadway Babies classes are 45 minutes in length.

ZUMBA: The Zumba® program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away. Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, to get hooked. Zumba® Fanatics achieve long-term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in one exciting hour of calorie-burning, body-energizing, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate for life.

ZUMBAkIDZ: A Zumba style class designed especially for the younger set.  Kids will enjoy the dance moves and the Latin rhythms, all while “secretly” getting great exercise and getting rid of all their extra energy!

TAP- A style of American theatrical dance, distinguished by percussive footwork that marks out precise rhythmic patterns on the floor. It’s so much fun!

VARIATIONS: A class designed to challenge the dancer each and every week with a rotating schedule of classes including Jumps & Turns, Jazz, Stretch & Strength, etc.
